The short version
- Browser play: in a creator-only Chrome beta now. Roblox is aiming to start rolling it out to players before the end of 2026.
- Standalone apps: called Roblox Everywhere. Selected top games first, in the first half of 2027, then any creator later.
- Offline play: for games that support it, expected around mid-2027.
- Today: you still need the Roblox app. Avoid third-party "Roblox in a browser" sites that ask for your login.
At its developer conference in September 2026, Roblox announced new ways to play away from its app: standalone apps for mobile, PC and consoles, play in Chrome from a game's page, and offline play. Its Q3 results in October added dates and detail. Each of the three works differently and arrives at a different time, so it's worth taking them one at a time.
What's coming and when
| Feature | What it is | Status | Roblox's timing |
|---|---|---|---|

| Offline play | Games with offline modes alongside online ones | Announced | Around mid-2027 |
Web Play: Roblox in Chrome
Web Play runs Roblox inside the browser using a WebAssembly build of the engine, so there's nothing to install. Roblox says players in the browser will be able to play with people on the app, so a friend on a phone and a friend on a school laptop can still be in the same server.
For now it's only for creators testing their own games. On 29 October Roblox opened a beta with a "Play in Browser" button in the Creator Hub. It works in Chrome on Windows, macOS and Android. Other browsers and systems are blocked by default, and iOS Safari isn't verified. The current version draws with WebGL and will move to WebGPU before the full launch.
What you lose in the browser
Roblox is unusually direct about this. It says running in a browser has "a significant gameplay performance impact" and that the app will always be the better way to play. Several features aren't available on the web in the beta, including voice chat, party chat, Friends Chat and video ads.
The known issues list is what you'd expect from an early beta: slow first loads, blurry interface text, settings that reset, and Chrome choosing a laptop's integrated graphics instead of the dedicated GPU. On x86 machines, Chrome versions older than 156 can crash after about five minutes.
Roblox's planned minimum for the launch is 6 GB of RAM, a 64-bit processor with four cores and a graphics chip that supports both WebGL 2 and WebGPU. That rules out many older Chromebooks and budget laptops, which are exactly the machines a browser version might otherwise help.
Watch out for fake "browser Roblox" sites
Until Web Play reaches players, the Play button on roblox.com still launches the installed app. Sites that offer Roblox in a browser today are third-party streaming services, not Roblox. Don't enter your Roblox password anywhere except roblox.com, and when Web Play does launch, you'll start it from the game's own page on Roblox.
Roblox Everywhere: games as their own apps
This is the bigger change. Roblox wants creators to be able to "self-publish standalone games created on Roblox to the app store of their choice". A hit game could appear in an app store under its own name and icon, without the player ever opening Roblox, while still using Roblox accounts, friends lists, chat, safety tools and the Robux economy behind the scenes.
Roblox told investors it will start with selected top games, published by Roblox itself, in the first half of 2027. In a second phase, any creator would be able to generate a standalone build and submit it to stores themselves. Roblox hasn't said which games go first or which stores and consoles will take part.
For players, the practical question is accounts and spending. Roblox's description suggests your existing account and Robux carry across, but the details of signing in and paying inside another store's app haven't been published yet.
The Universal Player
In the same shareholder letter Roblox described a Universal Player, which would use AI to import games made for consoles, PC or mobile onto Roblox. It's an early-stage idea in the letter rather than a product, so treat it as a direction, not a feature.
Offline play
Roblox has always needed a connection, because every game runs on Roblox's servers. The announced offline mode is for games that combine an offline part with their online modes, such as a single-player campaign alongside a multiplayer lobby. It won't make every game playable on a plane. Developer posts point to mid-2027, and the details of how saves and purchases sync afterwards are still to come.
Why Roblox is doing this
Roblox has set itself a goal of 10% of the global games market. Its Q3 2026 results showed daily users down on a year earlier for the first time, which we looked at alongside our own chart data in our Roblox Q3 2026 results analysis. Getting games into other app stores and onto browsers reaches people who would never install the Roblox app, and it gives its biggest creators a reason to stay. If you want to see which games are likely candidates for the first standalone releases, our list of the most played Roblox games is the place to start.

Frequently asked questions
Can you play Roblox in a browser?
Not yet for players. Roblox's Web Play is in a creator-only beta in Chrome on Windows, macOS and Android. Roblox has said it's aiming to start a gradual rollout to players before the end of 2026. Today the Play button on roblox.com still opens the installed app.
Is it safe to use sites that let you play Roblox in a browser?
Be careful. Before Roblox's own Web Play, browser versions came from third-party streaming sites. Never type your Roblox password into a site that isn't roblox.com. When Web Play arrives it will be on roblox.com itself.
What won't work in Roblox Web Play?
In the beta, voice chat, party chat, Friends Chat and video ads aren't available, and Roblox says playing in a browser has a significant performance cost compared with the app. Known issues include slow first loads, blurry interface text and settings that don't save.
What is Roblox Everywhere?
Roblox's plan to let creators publish their Roblox games as standalone apps in other app stores, while keeping Roblox accounts, friends, safety systems and the in-game economy. Roblox says the first phase, with selected top games, should launch in the first half of 2027.
Will Roblox work offline?
Roblox has announced offline play for games that combine it with online modes. Developer posts point to mid-2027. It won't make the whole platform work offline, only games that are built for it.
