Where to find ice caves
Ice caves are a new cave biome that generates underground beneath the Overworld's colder biomes. So if you want to find one, start on the surface somewhere snowy or frozen and dig or explore down.
They're built mostly from packed ice and calcite, with patches of snow on the floor. Large icicles made of packed ice grow from both the floor and the ceiling, and smaller icicle blocks hang everywhere overhead. Ores still appear, in pockets of stone and deepslate, so they're worth mining as well as admiring.
Two details change how they feel. Glow lichen doesn't grow in them, so the only natural light comes from ice crystals. And alongside the usual cave mobs, strays and frostbites can spawn there, which makes them more dangerous than a normal cave of the same size.
The new blocks
| Block | What it does | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Ice crystal | A glowing crystal, similar to amethyst clusters. Can be placed in any direction. | Breaks if the block it's attached to is removed. |
| Icicle | A pointed block in the same family as dripstone and sulfur spikes, with base, middle and tip pieces. Grows up to 5 blocks long when hanging down. | Breaks near light, falls on whatever is below, and hurts a lot to land on. |
Icicles only grow where there's no light source nearby, and never in the Nether. Put a torch near them and the pointed blocks break, which is pretty but dangerous if you're standing underneath. In practice that means lighting a cave from the edges and checking the ceiling before you place a torch in the middle of a room.

The frostbite
The frostbite is a zombie variant for cold places. It spawns in cold and icy biomes, including the new caves, and fights in two ways. Up close it hits you and applies Freezing. From further away, if it's carrying ice balls, it throws them.
- Normal zombies and husks turn into frostbites if they stay inside powder snow.
- Frostbites stand on powder snow and aren't slowed by it or by Freezing.
- Leave one underwater long enough and it turns back into a normal zombie.
- They drop rotten flesh and ice balls.
Ice balls are the frostbite's projectile. They deal up to 4 damage, less when they're moving slowly, knock you back and shatter on impact.
The Freezing effect
Freezing is a new status effect. It slowly freezes whatever it's applied to, as if they were standing in powder snow. Players shake and eventually take damage. Mobs take extra damage while frozen, and mobs that are especially vulnerable to freezing take five times as much.
You can use it too. Ice balls are a brewing ingredient for potions of Freezing, including splash and lingering versions. Put a lingering potion of Freezing in the middle of a crafting grid, surround it with eight arrows, and you get arrows of Freezing. Against fire-themed mobs that are weak to cold, that could be very handy.
To protect yourself, wear leather armour. As with powder snow, it doesn't stop you being frozen, but it stops the freezing from hurting you.
How to try it now
- Java Edition: in the Minecraft Launcher, open Installations, turn on snapshots and create an installation for 26.4 Snapshot 3 or later. Ice caves arrived in Snapshot 3 on 6 October 2026.
- Bedrock Edition: install Minecraft Preview on a supported device, then switch on the experimental toggle for the upcoming drop when you create a new world.
- Use a new or copied world. Snapshots and previews can corrupt worlds, and you can't safely take a world back to the full release.
- Head somewhere cold, then go down. Ice caves only generate under colder biomes.

Build ideas with the new blocks
- Crystal path lights. Ice crystals give off light and can face any direction, so they make good path lights or wall lamps in a winter build.
- Icicle eaves. Placed icicles along a roof edge make a cottage look properly frozen. Keep strong lights away from them so they don't break.
- Calcite and packed ice walls. The biome's two main blocks look good together and give you a cold, clean palette.
- Snow and frost details. Mix in snow layers and powder snow around the entrance, but remember frostbites can walk on powder snow while you sink.
Release date
Mojang describes this as the final game drop of 2026 but hasn't given a date. Everything here comes from the testing builds, so names, numbers and recipes can still change before release. Switch 2 players will get it on the new hardware too, and our guide to Minecraft on Switch 2 covers the free upgrade. Frequently asked questions
When is the Minecraft Ice Caves update out?
Mojang calls it the final game drop of 2026 but hasn't announced a release date. It's in testing in Java Edition 26.4 snapshots and Bedrock Previews now.
What is the frostbite in Minecraft?
A zombie variant from cold biomes. Up close its hits apply the new Freezing effect, and at range it throws ice balls. Zombies and husks turn into frostbites when they stay in powder snow.
Do ice crystals give off light?
Yes. Ice crystals emit light and can be placed in any direction, a bit like amethyst clusters. Glow lichen doesn't generate in ice caves, so the crystals are the main natural light there.
Can icicles hurt you?
Yes. Falling icicles damage anything below them, and landing on an icicle deals extra damage. Icicles that point downward break when there's a light source nearby, so torches can bring them down.
How do I protect myself from Freezing?
Leather armour protects you from freezing damage, as it does in powder snow. It won't stop the effect being applied, but it stops it hurting you.
