Release date
Minecraft's Switch 2 version launches on Tuesday 27 October 2026. Pre-orders opened in early October on the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo's Australian store lists the physical release on 27 October and the digital release on 28 October, so check your local eShop listing if the exact day matters.
The boxed version is a Game-Key Card, which means the box gives you a licence to download the game rather than holding the full game on the cartridge.
Who gets it free
This is the part most people want to know, and the answer depends on how you bought Minecraft on the original Switch.
| You own | What you pay for Switch 2 Standard | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Minecraft on Switch, most regions | Nothing | End of January 2027 |
| Digital Minecraft on Switch, Japan or Taiwan | 100 yen or 30 NT dollars | End of January 2027 |
| Physical Switch cartridge | Full price, $29.99 in the US | None |
| No Switch version | Full price, $29.99 in the US | None |
The free route is a limited-time offer on the Nintendo eShop. If you qualify, claim it before the deadline even if you don't plan to play straight away. Digital owners can also move up to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at a discount instead of paying full price for those.
Physical cartridge owners have been left out, which has caused a fair amount of grumbling. If that's you, Switch 2 can play most original Switch games, so you can keep playing your cartridge while you wait for a sale.
The three editions
| Standard | Deluxe Collection | Ultimate Collection | |
|---|---|---|---|
| US price | $29.99 | $39.99 | $49.99 |
| Base game with Vibrant Visuals | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Super Mario Mash-Up Pack | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O'Blocks add-ons | No | Yes | Yes |
| Decocraft and Weapons + Tools add-ons | No | No | Yes |
| Exclusive Character Creator items | None | 3 | 5 |
| Minecoins | None | 700 | 1,000 |
Minecoins bought or included on a Nintendo device can only be spent in the Nintendo ecosystem, so they won't follow you to other platforms. If you mainly want the game, Standard is all you need. The bigger editions only make sense if you were going to buy those add-ons anyway.

What Vibrant Visuals changes
Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's enhanced graphics mode for the Bedrock version of Minecraft. It adds directional lighting, deeper shadows, reflective water, volumetric fog and richer colour, while keeping the familiar blocky look. On Switch 2 it's the default.
There are limits. Vibrant Visuals doesn't run in split-screen, and some Marketplace worlds and content don't support it. If you mostly play couch co-op with family, you'll spend that time in the standard look. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, which every edition includes, has been updated to work with Vibrant Visuals.
Your worlds and friends
Mojang says Minecraft data from the original Switch carries over, so you shouldn't have to start again. Minecraft on Switch is the Bedrock version, the same one on phones, Xbox, PlayStation and Windows, so cross-platform play with friends on those devices carries on as before. As on the original Switch, online play needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and playing with people on other platforms needs a Microsoft account.

Is it worth it?
- Digital Switch owners: yes, claim it. It costs nothing in most regions and you keep your worlds.
- Physical cartridge owners: it depends how much you care about lighting. The game itself is the same Bedrock Minecraft, and Vibrant Visuals is the main upgrade.
- New players on Switch 2: buy the Switch 2 version rather than the original, since the price is the same.
- Split-screen families: you'll get less out of it, because Vibrant Visuals is off in split-screen.
