Where Hytale stands before Chapter 1

Hytale has had an unusual road. Riot Games cancelled it in June 2025 after years of development. In November 2025 the original founder, Simon Collins-Laflamme, bought it back, and the game entered Early Access on 13 January 2026 with Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, multiplayer and modding support.

Since then the team has shipped updates every few weeks, but most of them were about stability and tools rather than new things to do. When the studio first showed Chapter 1 in July, Simon was blunt about it, writing that there weren't many reasons to come back and play Hytale at that point. Chapter 1 is meant to change that. It's the first of a series of chapters that will build out the Cursebreaker story inside Exploration Mode over the course of Early Access.

Release date and how the rollout works

Chapter 1 is dated for 12 October 2026. You don't have to wait for that day to see most of it, though. Since 3 September the studio has been adding Chapter 1 content in waves to the Update 7 pre-release, which anyone who owns the game can switch on from the settings in the Hytale launcher.

The pre-release is a test branch. Content there is unfinished, a lot of it is easiest to reach through Creative Mode, and the studio has warned that the rune system in particular will keep changing. If you care about a long-running survival world, play the pre-release on a copy of it, not the original.

The dungeon and the boss fight

The centrepiece is Hytale's first handcrafted dungeon, an underground goblin lair, with the game's first multi-phase boss waiting at the end. Coverage of the trailer names the boss the Gobliterator: a heavily armoured goblin machine that fills the arena with fire.

The technology behind the fight is arguably the bigger story. It runs on the Encounter Manager, a system that controls phases, enemy waves and changes to the arena. Encounters are built as content rather than engine code, which means the developers can make more of them quickly, and so can players and server owners. The Encounter Manager is already public on the pre-release, so expect community-made boss fights to start appearing soon after launch.

Goblins, the Goblin Breach and the Forgotten Temple

Chapter 1 is built around goblins. They come in several roles, from small melee fighters that swarm in groups to heavy shield-carriers and bomb throwers. Some are elites. The Feastmaster, for example, calls in reinforcements mid-fight, charges, and damages its surroundings. Not every goblin is hostile, either: some are friendly, and one runs a shop.

Your progress starts at the Forgotten Temple, which becomes the hub for every Early Access chapter from here on. Once you set the story going there, the Goblin Breach world event can trigger from time to time. It opens a temporary portal somewhere in your world that leads to an unstable fragment of Orbis, overrun by goblins and the Void.

That fragment is regenerated every time you enter, and the Void slowly pushes you out, so each trip is a race to explore and grab loot before you're ejected. Inside you'll find a first set of activities:

  • predators you can track and trap
  • Void assassins that hunt you down
  • treasure chests that spawn enemy waves when you open them
  • puzzles guarding areas you can't simply dig into

If your group would rather keep a building world peaceful, the pre-release has added a setting to switch world events off in Exploration worlds.

Runes and abilities

Runes are the most important system change in Chapter 1. An ability rune gives your character an active combat skill, and modifier runes change how that skill behaves. The studio's own example is a Fireball rune: one modifier splits the fireball into several projectiles, another adds a shock effect. The abilities sit on two new keys, E and R, next to your weapon's signature ability.

Chapter 1 starts with roughly six ability runes and a similar number of modifiers. The pre-release has included abilities such as Fireball, Ground Slam, Wind Strike, Enrage and Imbue Poison, but treat that list as a snapshot. The longer-term plan includes elements that react with each other, combos between players and runes that interact with the world, like ice freezing water blocks. Runeforging, where you craft and expand your rune collection, comes in a later chapter.

Gadgets, boats and carrying things

Goblins are tinkerers, and their inventions end up in your hands. Chapter 1 adds:

  • Rocket Boots, which give you a double jump
  • a Hookshot for reaching spots you couldn't climb to
  • a glider, plus a rework that lets you dive and climb by pressing or releasing Sprint
  • a Scrap Drill that breaks several blocks at once
  • a Spyglass for looking at things far away

Basic boats are coming too, along with a carry mechanic for bulky objects such as chests and explosive barrels. The engine also gains real transparency, which opens the door to stained glass and window blocks for builders.

What is not in Chapter 1

A few things that came up in the July preview have their own timelines. Knowing what isn't coming saves you from hunting for it on launch day:

  • Runeforging is planned for later.
  • Enchantments are not planned for Chapter 1.
  • WorldGen V2, the rebuilt world generator, is still in development, so Exploration worlds keep using the current generator for now.
  • Minigames, a collection of short party games with its own menu tab, is being built alongside the chapter but isn't tied to its release.
  • Adventure Mode as a separate, story-led mode is still on the roadmap.

How to get ready

Players

  • Back up your worlds before the update. Hypixel's notes say existing worlds upgrade the first time they load on the new version, so keep a copy from before that happens.
  • Update your graphics drivers. Hytale needs a card that supports at least OpenGL 4.1.
  • Check the minimum spec if you're on older hardware: an Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB of RAM (12 GB with integrated graphics in singleplayer), and 20 GB free on an SSD.

Server owners and modders

  • Expect plugins and mods to need updates. Update 7 changed enough under the hood that many server plugins broke on the pre-release.
  • Test on a staging copy of your server first, and keep a backup of the world from before the upgrade.
  • Look at the Encounter Manager early if you run an adventure or RPG server. It's the first official tool for building boss fights without engine code.

Should you come back for Chapter 1?

If you bought Hytale in January and drifted off because there wasn't much to do, Chapter 1 is the first update designed to give you a reason to return: a dungeon, a boss, a world event and a new way to fight. If you haven't bought it, remember this is still Early Access. Features are missing, things will change, and purchases are made through Hytale's own store rather than Steam. Reading the studio's own update posts is the best way to judge whether it's ready for you.

Hypixel's first look at Chapter 1 covers the design thinking behind runes, goblins and the Goblin Breach in more depth. If you want to compare Hytale with other block-world games first, our guide to games like Minecraft sorts the options by play style.
